Since its airing, MTv’s the College Life has received (lets just say) highly mixed reviews from fellow UW-Madison students. The show, which follows a group of 8 UW-Madison students through their freshmen year seems to have pissed off more than just a few UW-Madison students, according to the over 3,000 members of the Facebook group “Dear MTv”. The Facebook group disclaims that the group was basically created in “good fun”, but judging from a number of its wall posts some members of the student body don’t seem too thrilled about how UW-Madison is being portrayed.
The group goes on to claim that the show is scripted with an excerpt it displays stating, “It’s really too bad actually, that MTV is exploiting these freshmen with the lure of reality TV fame and then making these students into what they (MTV) feel is an entertaining view of college life by telling them what to do (i.e. telling Kevin that he should get kicked out of the dorms and then say his parents cut him off financially so his life is so hard, but secretly, MTV is paying for his new apartment.) It’s also unfortunate that the cast is not allowed to film anywhere on campus, so the show is kind of forced to be about what happens off campus.”
I personally think the group is hilarious, harmless, and displays the fact that UW-Madison is extremely diverse, and should not be judged on the actions of a mere fraction of the student population video taping them selves for a reality TV show.
I have heard opinions on the shows participants and content from all angles… in fact, a fellow blogger of mine at RedRodger.com recently ran a post proclaiming that the show didn’t showcase “enough” of the party scene here at UW-Madison, and instead just followed around a bunch of whiney, personality lacking coeds. Which ever side of the ‘College Life” fence you stand on, I think it’s important to remember it is a reality TV show, not real life.
